Do It Yourselfer Home and Garden Guy
США
Добавлен 21 июн 2018
Hi, my name is Tom and I live on a about a half-acre lot in the greater Los Angeles area of very sunny Southern California. While living in this location for over 22 years, I have become a builder and avid gardener. We originally bought in this location because the large lot of land and small home were inexpensive. With my knowledge of tools and how to build, I became an owner-builder. I designed and permitted my home addition through The Department of Building and Safety. With the help of some good friends, I added on to our small home, making it more comfortable for us. With such a large yard, I have learned respect and passion for gardening and its power of beautification, enduring the challenges and many rewards. My landscape has always been transformed, either for my dogs and us or what Mother Nature throws at us in times of drought. To conclude, be it either building or gardening, I hope I can give you small tips or ideas that inspire your home improvement projects.
Growing Climbing Cucumbers and Tomatoes in a Small Container Garden
A brief discussion on some details about this specific small garden. First, if your vegetables are not damaged or outright destroyed by hungry rodents, then I would completely understand a wire-mesh plant protection cage is not right for you. But, if you do have scavenging critters and want to rid yourself of the pillaging, then a “breach-free protection cage” will give your small vegetable garden 100% protection and allow you to harvest all the fruits of your labor so that you can enjoy vine-ripened fruits. (My cost to make it was about $800 or so, which does not include the steel containers.) If you are interested in it, here’s the link to building it: ruclips.net/video/KPf922p9Nh0/виде...

Bird Bath Festival on my New DIY Garden Fountain
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.Год назад
This solid cobalt-blue bird bath is the latest of three fountains I have made. Though the other two are easy to clean out with a bucket, soft brush and cloth, this one is by far the easiest. On the backside bottom of this cobalt-blue bath is a half-inch brass garden-hose spigot held in place with a stainless-steel pipe fitted with watertight rubber gaskets and brass compression nuts. To clean i...
Removing Soil from a Heavy Root Ball before Transplanting
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.Год назад
The small tree that was transplanted is known locally as a Tecoma, “The Yellow Sun Trumpet.” It is one of the shrubs where the lower branches can be trimmed up to make it a “small tree” or left alone to become a very bushy shrub. (It goes under many different names. If you know it under a different name, let me know in the comments.) It’s about seven years old and is not deciduous in my area, w...
Dealing with Critters in the Vegetable Garden
Просмотров 858Год назад
There are so many elements in growing vegetables that gardeners have to contend with, from drought to heavy inundation and pests and diseases. When the joy of watching your fruiting plants grow becomes disconcerting after critters, that are understandably hungry, eat their way through your upcoming harvest and leave you wondering what to do next, this happened to me over the winter here in zone...
Detailed Steps for Making Home Garden Compost
Просмотров 801Год назад
I generally turn my new compost piles every six to seven days for about five to six weeks. If I was composting NON-allelopathic* branches and leaves, I would feel comfortable using the new compost created in this video in about 8 to 10 weeks. But if the wood chips were larger, it would take more time. Additionally, without using ammonia sulfate on the wood chips, it would take significantly lon...
Acacia Baileyana, from seed to 8 Foot Tree in 500 Days
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.Год назад
Update Here is a link to the Acacia Baileyana almost three years old, larger and in bloom: ruclips.net/video/nOn7ysobUlU/видео.html What created my interest in the Acacia Baileyana was when I saw the vibrant yellow “pompom-like” flowers that it produces in the winter and spring time here in Southern California. I have a nice-looking Texas mesquite tree that looks similar to the acacia and produ...
My Plant Protection Cage 1 Year Later (100% Critter Free)
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.2 года назад
This is the link to how I built my Plant Protection Cage: ruclips.net/video/hAI8p2PPpjM/видео.html It is a 100% protection guarantee against the little critters that go boo in the night (and even in the daytime for that matter). I have many fruit trees and a vegetable garden, both of which are nicely productive. But I have found it necessary to harvest early, while the fruits are still green, o...
Two Year Update on Planting Queen Palm Trees

This video is an update on “Planting Queen Palm Trees.” Here is the link for that first video: ruclips.net/video/4YV6deYunzo/видео.html My fertilization techniques for my Queen Palms are as follows: I apply Miracle Grow Shake ‘n’ Feed Palm Food every three months as directed on the container. Installing a Chapin 16oz Liquid Fertilizer Injector

Chapin 16oz Liquid Fertilizer Injector This video is not about hooking up your fertilizer just like I did. It is meant to show some key steps to properly checking and installing a fertilizer injector that clearly labels its product 60 psi max. But what I do like about my particular system is that one fertilizer injector can be used on four separate lines, using only one line a time. This partic...
Planting a Podocarpus Henkelii in Rocky Soil, Zone 10a
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.2 года назад
In this video I plant a Podocarpus Henkelii in my rocky soil. My property is situated on an ancient riverbed where in order to plant I have to excavate out rocks that weigh in the range from a couple of ounces to hundreds of pounds, with the largest in my experience around 400 to 500 pounds. Once the large rocks are removed the remaining soil is a mixture of small rocks, sand, and silt that dra...
Building a Plant Protection Cage on Wheels
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.3 года назад
This cage is sturdy and mobile and could be made for a fantastic pet cage. It was built to guard tree seedlings that I want to successfully mature. I am currently using it to protect my Acacia Baileyana tree seedlings. Often critters will chew, dig and decimate young plants in my yard, causing months of work to be lost. The cage’s interior is four feet high to accommodate small saplings. If you...
Watering Tank Converted into Budget Planter
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.3 года назад
This “Behlen Country” watering trough (2x2x4 feet, 103 gallon size) was purchased from Home Depot for $88.00. Its first purpose is for watering animals. It’s sturdy and should last for many years. The only modification I made was to drill five ¾ inch holes on its underside after I had removed the 1 inch drain plug from its side. I drilled the holes, as pictured in the video, to make sure that I...

Unboxing and Reviewing a Ginour Sprayer
I very much like your design. I don't have access to tools, etc., so I will just file this away in memory in case I ever get a chance to make one.
Great job all around 👏
Thank you!
I made one!! Yaayy me!! Thank you for this video!
Great! Post a video and let me know about it...
What kind of paint are you using?
Quikrete Cement Colorant. It colors all of the cement in the concrete. What is nice about using colorant is that when the concretion, or in this case the sunflower, either chips or wears down, the colorant is embedded throughout the cement. Therefore, it retains its dyed color and does not reveal gray cement as would chipped or worn-out paint. Here is where brown colorant is added to the water prior to mixing it into the concrete where it will color all the cement in that mix: 1:50 (around one minute fifty seconds of this video)
nice video. why can one just use a shovel?
The Graco channel makes it super hard. This is at least a bit simpler. Thanks!
Any tips on how to keep the water clean?
Cleanout is in the video's description
Perfect Demo. You are truly professional in demonstrating how to use a device. Perhaps, you need to write some operating procedures for companies. Thank you.
Wow, thanks
Why people talk alot, go straight to main thing! Save time!
You can use cow manure and it will go crazy 😅 but remember fertilizing trees is in winter not summer; as manure will keep the tree roots warm and full of all benefits. Nice video, greeting from Dubai 👍🏼
I love the casted sunflower. Job well done. Have you used a solar powered pump in your fountains? Any recommendations.
I discuss the type of pump I use in a bit more detail in this video: ruclips.net/video/0NAwYiGdR9g/видео.html
Will drilling through the ceramic pottery not break it?
Here's another fountain made where thin ceramic pottery is drilled to create a fountain "spout for the fountain." I have never had a problem with the ceramic pot breaking: ruclips.net/video/-yHCEMSyK-w/видео.html Both fountains are doing fine.
What particular yellow concrete dye did you use in your projects? Where did you purchase it from? Thank you!

Zipper, I am your #1 fan 🤗 ❤ Thank you, sir, for the tip 😊👍
So nice of you
Do you by chance sell these?
Sorry, I do not.
@@doityourselferhomeandgarde9732 Great video! I am going to attempt this.
Beautiful.
Hi Tom, can I buy some seeds for this tree from you?
No, sorry. Try Ebay, Amazon, or Etsy...
Time to go pottery shopping
Really nice! Love the video.
Really beautiful work and great ideas! Thanks!
Thank you! Cheers!
@@doityourselferhomeandgarde9732 I'm going to make a version of this. Have you found it hard keeping the rocks clean, algae free? Or is Just using the tray less maintenance?
This is pretty awesome! Thank you for the details! 🪶🪶🪶
You bet!
Great video, thanks for sharing!!
Thanks for watching!
What kind of Fountain did you use in where can I get it I like the size
The pot was purchased at Home Depot. I was in its garden department not too long ago and saw the same pot for sale and even at the same price paid sometime in early 2020. The size of the pot is in the video's description.
Can I just buy the sunflower from you 😂
Where do you get the forms?
Check the video's description for more information. Thanks
We're in Murray KY and are enjoying your videos greatly! God bless!
I'm obsessed! I have to build one!: Great idea, and beautiful job! Thank you! ❤😊
Beautiful birds baths 🛁
The pigeons approved is done you get 100% God bless people like you 🙏 more angels like need to come to this world
What an excellent bird bath. You are quite the craftsman.
Thank you
Welcome!
Hello Tom. We live in Los Angeles….not as handy and creative as you are and lived your video. Any chance you sell some of your creations?
Just bought this today. Such a helpful video! Thank youuuuu!
Your mortar/concrete mixture could be put in a heavy duty plastic bag (ziploc freezer bag), snip off one of the bottom corners and treat it like frosting in a pastry bag.
How did the plug get out of the fountain? Is the hole you drilled large enough for that?
The small plug fit through the original casted hole of that pot.
Too difficult to read the blue print
You are so creative. I won't be able to do this beautiful birdbath. The best I've ever seen 😍 🙌
Great bird bath! I’m getting ready to build similar but really want to put some sort of filter inside the build. Any thoughts or links?
Cleanout instructions in the video's description, following that procedure doesn't require a filter.
IDK
Best for a deeper bowl IMO
Thank you for the detailed instruction, which includes the important bird bath maintenance information not included in a lot of bird bath diy videos. Very well done!
So mosquito larvae doesn't hatch in all that water since it's constantly moving?
Mosquitos do not lay eggs in constantly (24/7) flowing, clean water.
Love it!!!!❤
why are you cutting all the flowers before they drop. so pretty. but good demo about the tool
Very nice!!
Thanks for the visit
7:29 cool-looking dragon
I love the bubbler
Thank you. I’m going to give this a try. Beautiful. Namaste. Lol
How do I get the guard to attach? Do l need an electric drill?😢
Phillips head screwdriver
Great video. I'm building two now. Ordered the mold just like you have . Everything is well explained except the brass nut is not a compression nut. It is a flange nut. Thanks for the video.
Enjoy!
